As part of our Great Things to do in South Hero Vermont series, we’re going to introduce you to Grand Isle State Park! Grand Isle is the largest island in Lake Champlain and Snow Farm Winery is in the southern town of the island, called South Hero. The northern part of Grand Isle contains a town called, well, Grand Isle, and that’s where the park is located.
That makes it a short drive from Snow Farm Vineyard and a great place to either camp as you visit the area or to visit on a day trip!
Grand Isle State Park is comprised of 226 acres of opportunities for camping, fishing, boating including kayaking and canoeing, great nature trails for short hikes and bird watching as well as nice beaches and picnic areas. With over 4,000 feet of beautiful natural shoreline, Grand Isle State Park has some shoreline areas that are nice beaches and others that are nice secluded more rugged areas to explore.

If you like you’re camping a bit on the more comfortable side, you’ll appreciate that there are 4 cabins as well as restrooms that have running water and hot showers!

The park includes a nature center that offers interesting activities including campfire programs, night hikes, amphibian explores as well as natural crafts and games, making it a nice place for your family to enjoy.
Some campers enjoy Grand Isle State Park for extended periods of time, and others only spend a night or two before embarking on to Burlington, VT, Montreal, Canada or any number of other destinations that are not far away. If you want to bring your own boat on a trailer, there’s a boat ramp on site. There’s usually a sand-court for volleyball as well as horseshoe courts and a play area.
People who camp at Grand Isle State Park can also enjoy Knight Point State Park and Alburgh Dunes State park for free. These are 7 miles and 19 miles away respectively. Alburgh Dunes State Park has possibly the best sandy beaches in Vermont so that’s a great place to spend a day sipping some SnowFarm Vineyard wines. Our Naked Mermaid makes a great beach wine!
