Fox Hill Maple

Fox Hill Maple

Four GENERATIONS OF LANE’S SUGARING IN SOUTH HERO

Why is Snow Farm Vineyard the best place to get your maple syrup and Fox Hill Maple wine?

All the best of the Vermont seasons happens on the West Shore of South Hero.  Our grapes are harvested in the Fall.  In the Spring we are harvesting from the maple orchard.

Before there was Fox Hill Maple wine there was pure Vermont maple syrup at Crescent Bay.  With inspiration from head winemaker Patrick Barrelet we began to innovate a maple wine. Fox Hill Maple is a sweet blend of our Seyval Blanc grapes and maple wine.

It’s sweeter in the islands.

Experience Vermont Maple

Working in the sugarbush

History & tradition

In 1987 Fred, Glady’s, Dave and Julie invested in a lightning wood fired 2 x 6 evaporator.  Nested in the woods the old sugarhouse didn’t have power except for a light dad ran an extension cord out to the sugarhouse to power.  When bedtime came and the kids went in he would spend hours in the sugar house tending to the boil.

Some of the first years the family used a combination of 80 buckets and a couple hundred taps.   Mom would always exclaim how her arms were getting stretched longer during sugaring season.

Gathered in the sugarhouse

Sap is running head to the sugarhouse.

There is no smell anywhere to be matched to the the amazing smell of a boil in the sugarhouse.  The steam rolls off the tops of the pans in thick clouds.   The sweet smell of the sap boiling and wood fire is one of a kind.

Boils mean that the family gets together.  Mom brings out a big crock pot and the boys are whipping up yet another batch of pancake mix for the skillet.   Somewhere stashed in one of the cabinets is a box of girlscout cookies.  A Spring sugaring tradition from way back.

Enjoying a sweet taste

woodfired evaporator and canned by hand

The roar of the sugarhouse and all of the laughter that comes with it lasts only a few weeks.  The community, the love and the true Vermont flavor is contained in each jug of maple syrup.  Pick up some up to enjoy throughout the year.

Maple syrup is great to enjoy over pancakes or ice cream.  Use as a sweetener in coffee or cooking.
