Good Cycling Practices
*Remember bicycles do not need to be registered to ride on the roads in the U.S. Respecting gets respect.
Good Biking Habits
- Ride single file
- Always use the bicycle lane where there is one available if you are moving at a slower speed than other traffic.
- Always use hand signals when turning or changing lanes. Other road users must be able to tell when you intend to change course.
- Always ride in a straight line, keeping as close as possible to the right-hand curb.
- When riding on a one-way street with two or more traffic lanes, you may align your bicycle with the left-hand curb if necessary.
- You may only use the full lane to make a left turn when it is necessary to avoid hazards, or when the lane is too narrow for you to safely share with a car.
- Never attach yourself or your bicycle to another vehicle traveling on the roadway.
Hand Signals
- Right turns – extend your right hand straight out to the right or at a right angle, with a flat palm and fingers pointing upward.
- Left turns – extend your left hand straight out to the left.
- Slowing or stopping – extend your left arm out at a right angle with a flat palm, fingers pointing either straight up or down towards the road.
Cyclists should note that it is illegal to use hand signals to indicate to drivers behind them that they may pass.
